ABB receives $78 million orders for Saudi power plants
The Zurich- based power and automation technology group, ABB has won an order costing around $78 million from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).

ABB will provide transformers for two new combined.cycle power plants that will enhance transmission capacity around the capital, Riyadh, and nearby areas of the Central Region.

The order was placed in the second quarter of this year. The company will provide generator step-up (GSU) transformers, power transformers and station other service transformers for SEC’s combined- cycle power plants.

According to Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB’s Power Products division - More electricity to spread across consumers and match up demanding industrial and household need in the region will be facilitated by the availability of these transformers. Lex Autolease gets £100m fleet contractThe Global infrastructure services group, Balfour Beatty has awarded Birmingham-based Lex Autolease a contract award worth more than £100m to manage its UK company car and light commercial vehicle fleet on a sale and leaseback basis.

The five-year deal sees Lex Autolease considers responsibility for 6,000 vehicles which are used across all of Balfour Beatty’s UK operating companies.
Lex Autolease will provide vehicles on a contract hire basis and facilitate an extensive range of fleet management other services covering service and maintenance, accident management and core vehicle hire.

AES awards $140 million Los Mina power plant in Dominican Republic
AES Dominicana, through Dominican Power Partners, DPP, has awarded Técnicas Reunidas (TR), the execution of the conversion to combined cycle of its Los Mina Power Plant in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The new power plant will add 114 MW of new power generation capacity to the existing 210 MW open cycle. The existing plant consists of two gas turbines operating in open cycle after which TR will install two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine and all the necessary balance of plant. The awarded project is a Lump Sum Turn Key (LTSK) contract covering the services for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and startup of the Plant, up to commercial operation.

The contract award has a value of approximately $140 million. Together with the contract signature, DPP will issue a limited notice to proceed that will be followed by a final notice to proceed expected in September this year. The plant will be completed in 27 months following the final notice to proceed.

BC Ferries awards $165 million contract for LNG powered vesselsBC Ferries has contract awarded a $165 million contract to build three new vessels powered by Liqufied Natural Gas (LNG) to a Polish company.

The ferry corporation announced July 3, that Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A of Gdansk, Poland bags the contract after the only B.C.-based shipyard, Vancouver’s Seaspan shipyard was shortlisted in the bidding process but withdrew their application due to commitments to the federal government.

The whole project is estimated at $252 million with $51 million dedicated to cover taxes and federal import duties when the ferries are supplied to the West Coast commencing in August 2016.

The last ferry is expected to arrive in February 2014, while all three will be capable to operate on either diesel or LNG.

Up to seven vessels of this specific class to be engaged in the fleet within the next coming years. The bidding processing did not entirely based on dollar figures. Instead, BC Ferries was drawn to Remontowa’s bid as a result of their experience with LNG-powered vessels. ADB sanctions $300 million for Assam’s power sector
External funds enters Assam’s power sector with the approval of $300 million loan by Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) to increase the capacity and efficiency of distribution and generation systems.

The multi-million loan funding, which is part of a wider 10-year, $3.5 billion state investment partner program, will help in upgrading generation and distribution sectors, covering the construction of a 120MW hydropower plant. It will also facilitates building up of new distribution lines and substations, financial management training and other support for staff of the state power companies, Assam Power Generation Corporation and Assam Power Distribution Company.

Assam Power Distribution Company’s finances by permitting it to lower purchases of expensive electricity from independent power producers is likely to be boost up by the ADB fund.

GDF SUEZ lands on $1.5 billion Mirfa power project in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) has contract awarded GDF SUEZ a 25-year Power and Water Purchase Agreement (PWPA) to manage the Mirfa Independent Water and Power (IWPP) project in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) will hold 80 per cent equity stake in the project and the rest will be held by GDF SUEZ.

The Mirfa project, situated 120 kilometers from Abu Dhabi, is the Emirate’s tenth facility to be constructed under the Public-Private Partnership model. The capital cost of $1.5 billion is estimated for the project built and will cover the attainment of some of the existing water and power facilities, the design, engineering and construction of new power and water facilities, as well as the processing of the plant. Deloitte bags $18.4 million project to inspect Cover Oregon transferDeloitte Consulting has been contract awarded by the Oregon Health Authority $18.4 million contract to oversee Cover Oregon’s transition to the federal health exchange.

Deloitte will act as a system integrator for both the federal switch and the transfer of technology for Medicaid enlistment from Cover Oregon to the Health Authority.
The transition is likely to be done by Nov. 15, the outset of the next open enlistment period. The contract has very stringent oversight and accountability to assure the vendor delivers, says, Tina Edlund, who is overseeing the transition for Gov. John Kitzhaber.

The contract terms involves accountability and oversight activities, with payments made only upon state consent of deliverables. Even more, the state will inhibit an amount to assure the system continues to perform as designated.

It’s a blunt contradiction to Cover Oregon’s IT extensively criticized contract with Oracle Corp., which was formed on time and materials.
