Hamid Gul, the late general, has been described as the father of the Taliban by some commentators. There is no doubt that Gul was the most virulent anti-Indian face among all other service ISI chiefs. However, the concept that he is the creator of Taliban, is completely wrong. Taliban is the brainchild of General Naseerullah Babar, Benazir Bhutto’s interior minister during her second tenure as prime minister (1993-96). The ISI was not trusted by Benazir. She tried to cut it down to size by firing Gul during her first tenure (1988-1990) for the failure of ISI for overseeingthe operations of mujahideen for capturing Jalalabad after the Soviet withdrawal of 1989.
