DB awards €312 million Rastatt tunnel construction project

German Rail (DB) has awarded a €312m contract award to a joint venture of Ed Züblin and Hochtief to build the 4270m Rastatt tunnel as part of the project to enhance the Karlsruhe – Basle corridor for 250km/h operation.

The twin-bore tunnel will be linked every 500m by transverse tunnels. The construction work is considered technically challenging because of the geological and hydrological conditions and the shallow depth to a maximum of 20m.
