New South Wales awards $7.79 billion to operate automated rail link

The Northwest Rapid Transit consortium has been elected as the preferred bidder for the Operations, Trains & Systems contract award worth $A 8.3 billion ($US 7.79 billion) for the North West Rail Link automated metro in Sydney, announced by The Australian state of New South Wales.

The consortium comprises of MTR Corporation, John Holland, Leighton Contractors, UGL Rail other Services, and Plenary Group. A rival offer had been submitted by the TransForm consortium of Serco, Bombardier Transportation, SNC-Lavalin Capital, McConnell Dowell Constructors, John Laing Investments and Macquarie Capital Group. Alstom in partnership with UGL Rail is expected to supply the fleet of automatic trains for the project.
